What are Yom Ha’atzmaut
and Yom Hazikaron?
"Rock
and savior of Israel, bless the State of Israel, the beginning of
our redemption."
Most
of the holidays we’ve celebrated until now were based on events that
took place long ago. In fact, until 1948, the newest holiday we had
was Chanukah. Finally, after two thousand years of Exile, the Jews
once again became an independent people in their own homeland. The
day we regained our independence is Yom Ha’atzma’ut. The day before
we celebrate Yom Ha’atzma’ut we observe Yom Hazikaron. On this day
we remember the many people who died in the struggle to regain and
keep our independence.
