History

During the long exile, Jews never lost hope that one day they would return to their country. Every day, in their prayers, and in their celebrations, they would mention Israel and Zion. Often small groups of Jews would risk the dangerous journey to visit and settle in the land of Israel. About 100 years ago, a man named Theodor Herzl began promoting the idea that the Jews should have a country of their own. To create this country, Herzl founded the Zionist Movement. He traveled widely, convincing Jews of his ideas. Many of them eventually settled in Israel, where they rebuilt the ancient cities and even founded new ones. For the first time in two thousand years, there was a Jewish community in Israel of farmers and factory workers and doctors and lawyers. There were soldiers and policemen and firemen and clerks. The Jews in Israel came from Russia, America, Germany, Morocco, and even from China. They came from practically every corner of the world. In November, 1947, the United Nations voted to create a Jewish state in the land of Israel and in May 1948 the State of Israel was born.
