Ba’Omer celebrates the revolt of Shimon Bar Kochba, who led the Jewish
People and their allies against the Romans 64 years after the Temple was
destroyed. Bar Kochba’s revolt eventually ended in failure. He and many
thousands of his followers died in battle against the powerful Roman
armies. But for many Jews Bar Kochba is a great hero. He gave them hope
after the Temple was destroyed and taught them that they should struggle
even against the greatest odds to maintain their independence and
identity. Hundreds of years later, many Jews in modern Israel regarded Bar
Kochba as an inspiration in their fight to win Israel”s independence.
