A Real Home

A wealthy Jew once came to visit his rebbe, who lived in another town in abject poverty. When the Jew entered the rebbe’s room he saw nothing but a bed, a chair and a table - ill-constructed at that. He asked the rebbe why he lived in such poverty. Surely the visitor and other hassidim could help the rebbe to live a more comfortable life.

The rebbe asked his visitor where he was staying while in town, and the visitor gave the name of a small local hotel. “And what is in your room please?” asked the rebbe. “A bed, a chair and a table,” answered the visitor. “And at home, where you live, what do you have?” “Fine French furniture, silver candlesticks, the best porcelain, beautiful linen...”

“And so it is with me,” said the rebbe. “In my real home I have all the luxuries you could imagine, but here in my temporary dwelling I need very little.” “And where is your real home?” asked the visitor. “In Jerusalem, where we all have a place to live,” was the answer.
