Even the youngest children are encouraged to participate in the seder. In fact, everything at the seder is planned so that they stay interested and ask lots of questions. That’s why the seder begins with the youngest child asking four questions about the seder: Why are we eating matza instead of bread? Why are we eating strange vegetables? Why are we dipping our food in salt water and haroset? Why are we leaning to the side instead of sitting up straight? These questions are called the Ma Nishtana, which means .Why is this night different from any other night? The adults answer them: Avadim hayinu lePharaoh B’Mitzrayim, We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and then tell the story of how the Jews became free.
