Ruth

The Book of Ruth tells the story of a young widow, who moved with her mother-in-law Naomi to Bethlehem and married Boaz, a local leader and a relative of her late husband. Many Jews read the Book of Ruth in the synagogue on Shavuot. The story centers around the harvest of barley, which takes place during Shavuot. It also describes how Ruth, who was born in Moab, chose to become part of the Jewish people by accepting the commandments - in fact, she was to become an ancestor of King David. This provides another reason as to why we read the Book of Ruth. By joining the Jewish people, Ruth accepted the Torah, just like the tradition says all Jews did at Mount Sinai on Shavuot. The Book of Ruth teaches us that with devotion and commitment anyone can become a prominent member of the Jewish People.
